Learning the Spanish Language — Project Day 47

Indirect Objects

It's definitiely not a biggie, but today's Language Transfer exercises reminded me that I haven't yet got the direct vs. indirect personal pronouns of he, she, and you formal down pat. And I need to keep working on the substitution of 'se' for 'le' when that would otherwise result in the non-permissable pairing of direct and indirect objects, i.e. 'se lo', 'se la', 'se los', 'se las'.

Imperfect 'you' for '-er' and '-ir' verbs

Another reminder from today's Language Transfer exercises — I'm still a bit clunky on the imperfect forms for the familiar 'you' for '-er' and '-ir' verbs. My memory of that tense is still dominated by the '-ar' forms. I need to remember 'vivías' and 'vivíais'.

Quantitative Adjective Pronouns

Where numbers and other pronouns like 'algunos' 'todos' function as adjectives. N.B. 'uno/una' takes gender, non-numbers take both take both gender and number.

Examples

  • algnuos / algunas
  • ambos / ambas — both
  • cada uno / cada una
  • demasiado / demasiada / demasidados / demasiadas
  • la mayoria
  • los demás / las demás — the rest (of them)
  • los dos / las dos
  • más
  • menos
  • mucho / mucha / muchos / muchas
  • nada
  • ninguno / ninguna
  • otro / otra
  • poco / poca
  • primero / primera
  • todo / toda
  • último / última
  • unos / unas
  • unos cuantos / unas cuantas — a few (of them)
  • varios / varias — several

Only one error of substance in exercises on this topic — I had 'pocas personas', instead of 'unas cuantas personas'. Actually, I suspect that's not actualy wrong — just not what the question wanted in this exercise context. I think 'algunas personas' might also have worked — at least according to Google Translate.

Noteworthy incidendal errors and simple observations, from the exercises:

  • campo vs. pais distinction
  • El setenta por ciento de
  • voy de compras — not 'voy a'
  • encantarse — is reflexive
  • no recibe ninguno — requires double negative
  • miles de personas

Idioms I came across during the exercises

  • "acabó por + infinitive" — 'ended-up'
  • el último en salir
  • unas cuantas personas — a few people
  • van de excursión — like 'de vacaciones'
