A bit of a potpouri today. It's main theme is the origins and decline of sixties soul. 1959 delivers a big dash of classic R&B, while the Blaxloitation set reminds me of the funky sounds that might have wiped soul from the dance floors, had it not been for underground scenes like Northern Soul and Belgian Popcorn. Don't get me wrong. I love a bit of funk. But trashing melody and chord progressions to emphasise the rhythmic bassline can go too far. As the dreary drumming of contemporary 'dance' music attests. That said, Sardinia's “Sa danza” demonstrates that rhythm has long been the winner on the dance floor. It's Portuguese Saturday.
