There's other stuff here, but for me, today's playlist is mostly about Victor Jara. A beautiful spirit, voice and guitar, brutally snuffed out by a gang of cruel and stupid fascists. Sadly, Pinochet's gang were not the only torturers and despots that Margaret Thatcher's government supported, supplied and sustained. I discovered Jara's music around the time of his murder. It haunted me then, and it still does. Sometimes I just can't listen to the music, because his story too painful to bear. But whenever I do, I find that even the saddest and most plaintive tune has something hopeful and uplifting in it.
