Maurice Chevalier, Bella bionda

I've always got half an hour to spend on French Chanson. And for anglophones at least, nobody epitomizes the genre better than Maurice Chevalier. Of course. I love the ambiguity of a character who was threatened for having a Jewish wife, for collaborating with the Nazis and for supporting Communist causes in France and abroad. There's not much deep and meaningful in his stuff, but it's a pretty decent passatempo. Bionda bella bionda is one of the best known Canti Popolare. It's one I want to learn and there's a couple of really good performances here. Orieta Bert stands out. The 1967 selection is all Italian Pop. And it's Portugues Saturday.
