Betty Curtis was hardly a revolutionary icon, but she is representative of the fun and distinctive spin that the Italian music industry put on 60s pop. On the other hand, there's no greater icon of struggle than Ché Guevara, the subject of "Hasta Sempre". While the Spanish Civil War — really a war of fascist intervention — has been very much on my mind of late. Of course today's populist demagoguery, and the cack-handed democratic response, are very different from the 1930s. But there are still lessons to be learned and inspiration to be taken from the hopeless, but heroic, struggle of the second Spanish Republic.
