Gian Pieretti, Danse de Zorba

Gian Pieretti is one of those liminal artists that I love. Not one for reductionist fusion. But rather straddling genres. Taking bits of one into another, while preserving the core of the original. Most of today's selection comes from the time he was straddling 60s beat, cantautore and folk-pop sounds. You'll hear a bit of each in this selection. Mikis Theodorakis's “La danse de Zorba” needs no introduction as a song. Here I've tried to give a flavour of it's international reverberations while sampling a few truly great voices like those of Dalida and Milva — not omitting Melina Mercouri's distinctive contribution. 1958 is mostly hardcore R&B, while German Wednesday largely belongs to Hannes Wader and Helut Debus.
