J.J. Barnes, Hurt

J.J. Barnes has got to be one of the most prototypical, archetypal, Northern Soul artists ever. A fine, if not utterly perfect, voice backed by some great tunes and some great session singers, but fewer releases and even fewer hits than his performances clearly deserved. And, to top it all, several years at Motown where he was prevented from releasing tracks or working elsewhere. Of those here, “Real Humdinger” is my favourite. A real 'swing and clap' classic in the Motown style. Many speculate that he was 'taken out' for the 'sin' of sounding too much like Marvin Gaye. Judge for yourselves. Timi Yuto's Hurt is the featured song, if only to demonstrate the range of talents and languages its covers attracted. It's Spanish Friday, and we're visiting Berlin to round out the selection.
