Lugano Bella, Northern Soul 500

Addio Lugano Bella is one of the best known songs of the Italian left. In part, because it's catchy waltz time lends itself to communal singing. In part, because it tells a story. In part, because its plaintive mood of loss and longing complete the the kind of ingredient list you'd look for in a really popular pop song. This, no doubt, explains its lasting appeal, long after the anarchist movement that inspired it shuffled off its mortal coil. Obviously, the selection from Kevin Roberts's Northern Soul 500 appeals to the same sentimental nostalgia to which I'm too often prone. It's French Tuesday. While 1960 provides another sample from that period of hope, optimism and pop music transition.
