Erik Wille and Arthur McBride

Erik Wille en Groep is one of the more prominent outfits on the current Flemish folk scene. Erik specialises in genres known as “market singing” and “café chantant”. The latter roughly translates as “Pub Singing” — a tradition which is almost dead in the UK, but which is closer to my heart than any other genre, bar none. Although, in the strictest terms, “café chantant” refers to a tradition of café singing associated with the Musette Accordion, which emerged in the late C19th, Belle Epoque, and spread from its original home in N.E. France and La Wallonie to the entire world. It still survives in isolated pubs and cafés around the globe, but is probably found more easily in Eastern Belgium than anywhere else.
